Malibu Open Wrap-up
Even less than perfect weather couldn’t keep water sports fans away from the 2008 Malibu Open in Oakland County, Michigan. This gathering of the world’s top pros at Pontiac Lake brought the crowds, wind, rain or shine. Club Malibu members took this chance to meet their favorite pros through exclusive VIP access, while other spectators focused on the division of the $120,000 purse Malibu Boats put up. Surprisingly a good chunk of the money stayed in the Malibu Boats family with Team Malibu taking home the prizes in 4 out of 5 of the events. Phillip Soven in men’s wakeboard, Dallas Friday in women’s wakeboard, Will Asher in men’s slalom and Emma Sheers in women’s slalom. Freddy Kruger took the top podium spot in Jump. During breaks in the water sports action, spectators enjoyed the high-speed action at the Quake on the Lake Hydroplane Boat Races. All proceeds from both events went to support the Rainbow Connection for terminally ill children. There was never a dull moment at the 2008 Malibu Open. Tune in to Fox Sports Network in late August to witness the tournament first hand.
At the 2008 Malibu Open the VIP area welcomed not only pros, but Club Malibu members as well. Malibu Boats owner’s club members received free admission, food and drinks as well as access to their favorite pro athletes. Pros like Team Malibu rider, Kevin Henshaw sipped Monster with the fans and signed autographs. Following the wakeboard finals, athletes, sponsors and Club Malibu members were treated to a roasted pig luau hosted by local Malibu Boats Dealer, Skiers Pier. And when Club members weren’t partaking in their exclusive member benefits, they watched some amazing competition.
In what many called, “…the best pro men’s wakeboard final of the year,” Team Malibu’s Phillip Soven continued his domination of the sport. Soven took the win and a check for $12,000. JD Webb joined him on the podium taking 2nd Place and receiving $7500 for his efforts and New Zealand Team Malibu member, Jeff Weatherall rounded out the top three winning a $4500 prize.
Dallas Friday, Nicola Butler and Laura Lohrmann battled for their share of a $10,000 purse in women’s wakeboarding, double what they earn in most tournaments. Friday dominated the semis and was favored for the win going in to Saturday. Butler rode well, but tweaked her knee at the end of her semi run and was questionable to return for the finals. Nicola did make it back for Saturday’s finals and rode well enough to hang on to second place and $2500. It was Team Malibu’s Dallas Friday who would take the top podium spot and a check for $6000. Lohrmann earned $1500 and rounded out the pro women’s field with a third-place finish.
Team Malibu skier and one of the most dominant women in the history of the sport, Emma Sheers took the women’s slalom title and the $10,000 prize.. Sheers proved that she is back in top form with an outstanding performance. Karen Truelove and April Coble Eller completed the podium earning $5500 and $2500 respectively, proving that experience reigned supreme at the Malibu Open.
On the men’s side, Team Malibu skier, Will Asher donated more equipment to the crowd after he crushed 39 off and took home the win with his $12,000 check. On his victory lap, he executed his signature move and gave the crowd some parting gifts. Asher stripped down to his shorts throwing his vest and gloves into the crowd. Chris Parrish and Team Malibu skier Thomas Degasperi took home $7500 and $4500 respectively. They came up just short of Asher’s outstanding performance.
The Jump final was a fitting end to the Malibu Open with huge leaps. Brian Kinney came out and gave it his all, but in the end, the injury he sustained earlier in the competition affected his finals performance. This left Jaret Llewellyn and Freddy Krueger competing for the top spot. Llewellyn held the #1 slot until Krueger's third and final jump, and in a scenario we have seen a lot this season, Freddy took home the title and $12,000 on his last jump, posting an amazing distance of 221 feet.
The “Noise of the North”, Dano the Mano, called the wakeboard action from the tower, while Tadd Schreiber commentated for the skiers and jumpers. Jeff Barton handled the television commentary along with close Malibu Boats friend, Cindy Gibbs. If you weren’t on-site to enjoy the Malibu Open, you can still catch all of the water sports action first hand when the event airs on Fox Sports in late August.
