On the opening day of The Big Seattle Boat Show, Malibu Boats surprised Bill Baker, owner of Bake's Marine, with an award, a jacket and a gathering commemorating his 20 years as a Malibu Boats dealer. One of Malibu’s top-ten dealers in sales,
Bake’s Marine is more than a business partner to the World’s #1 selling towboat manufacturer. Bill Baker and the entire crew at Bake’s Marine are part of the Malibu Boats Family and this honor reflected that level of respect.
“I really felt honored to get the award and I was totally surprised,” Baker admitted.
Baker had no idea Mark Gibbs, Malibu Boats Northwestern Regional Sales Manager, helped coordinate the special event for him. The
Bake’s Marine boat show booth was busting with Malibu boat owners, boat dealers, industry reps, Bake’s employees and representatives from the
National Marine Trade Assoc., (NMTA). Michael Campbell, President of the NMTA, made a very moving speech about Baker. Campbell has known Baker for years and did a great job congratulating him. Gibbs also made a short speech and presented Baker with a leather jacket and custom trophy from Malibu Boats. Mike Sanchez, Malibu Boats Warranty and Customer Service Director, also flew in for the ceremony. The crowd cheered Bake’s Marine and toasted
Champagne to commemorate the milestone.
When Baker was asked about the secret to his success he responded, “One thing I have going for myself is the team at
Bake’s.” He continued, “They come to work everyday looking for ways to be better, more efficient and remembered by our customers.”
Baker was honored by Malibu Boats, but so was Bake’s Marine, the dealership. When asked about his success and longevity, Baker always shifts the focus back to his crew. He has an amazing cast of individuals around him that make Bake’s Marine possible and some of them have been there almost as long as Baker. Karen Audett bought a Malibu boat from Bake’s in 1989 and shortly after that went to work for Bill. She can’t say enough about the boat she sells, the man she works for and people she works with. It’s all about the team at
Bake’s Marine.
When we asked Audett what keeps her at Bake’s she said, “I Love my boat, my boss, my customers and my coworkers!” Audett explained, “I bought my first boat from Bill, retail, over 19 years ago. Since then I have had many boats and can’t picture myself without a Malibu or
Bake’s Marine.”
Baker bought his first Malibu boat in 1988. A year later Malibu Boats approached him to become a dealer. He opened the doors to Bake’s Marine in Issaquah, WA on January 23, 1989 and has been selling Malibu Boats ever since.
“We wanted dealers who were personally sold on Malibu,” Alkema told us. “That was Bill. His excitement and energy was contagious.” He continued, “We wanted our partners to build their dealerships and succeed alongside Malibu Boats. Bill has done just that.” Alkema concluded, “I am very proud of Bill as a Malibu Dealer and even prouder to call him a friend.”
The Bake’s/Malibu connection represents one of Malibu’s longest relationships with a dealer. Malibu Boats began building boats in 1982 and less than six years later Bake’s Marine came on board. Baker can recall when the company’s dealer meetings were held at Bob Alkema’s house. Alkema is the founder and CEO of Malibu Boats. These early meetings consisted of a hand full of dealers and Malibu employees who always ended up in a Guts game by the end of the meeting. Baker has been present for many of the milestones Malibu Boats has experienced from the first Boat of the Year Award in 1989 to the addition of the Tennessee and Australia plants to the introduction of the popular Wedge to the first Wakesetter model.
“Being part of water sports in this area is probably more selfish than shrewd. I wanted to be part of the elite community. This is why we support
Northwest Riders so others can be introduced to water sports.”
Baker is active in the industry and his community, water sports related and otherwise. Currently he sits on the Board of Issaquah Community Bank and the Northwest Marine Trade Association. Baker also works with local riders to further the sport of wakeboarding in his area. Baker works closely with the
Northwest Riders sponsoring tournaments and events in the Seattle area.
“Everyday should be a challenge and a reward. I want to learn something new everyday and try to teach someone else something new everyday.”
This is a statement Baker lives by.
